Power System Design, Monitoring and Quality Reporting in Melbourne

Completed industrial electrical upgrade at Delphi Somerton facility

ARA Electrical Services provides power system design, power monitoring, and power quality reporting for industrial and commercial sites across Melbourne, Victoria and Australia. This work is about understanding how an electrical system is actually performing, not just how it was designed to perform, and using that information to make sound engineering decisions about what needs to change.

Electrical systems on industrial sites change over time. Load grows, equipment is added, distribution infrastructure is modified, and the original design assumptions become less accurate. Without structured analysis, those changes accumulate until they show up as nuisance trips, equipment failures, protection issues, or infrastructure that is operating outside its rated limits. Power system analysis gives sites the visibility to manage those risks before they become operational problems.

Power System Design

ARA designs LV and HV power distribution systems for industrial and commercial facilities. Design scope covers switchboard and MCC configuration, cable system design, protection scheme development, earthing system design, and substation and transformer arrangements, all developed in accordance with AS/NZS 3000, AS 2067 where HV systems are involved, and applicable network provider requirements.

Power system design needs to account for more than present-day load. Fault level headroom, protection coordination, load growth, future equipment additions, and the maintainability of the system over its operational life all influence how the design should be structured. Getting that right at the design stage avoids costly modifications once the system is in service.

Protection Studies and Fault Level Analysis

Protection studies assess whether a power system will respond to fault conditions as intended. On industrial sites, correct protection coordination means the device nearest a fault clears first, while upstream protection remains in service. When that coordination is missing, a downstream fault causes a much larger interruption than it should.

ARA conducts short-circuit analysis using IEC 60909 methodology for both LV and HV systems, assessing fault current levels at key network nodes, protection device settings and operating times, coordination and discrimination between upstream and downstream devices, and equipment duty ratings against available fault current. This analysis is relevant for new installations and for existing systems that have changed since their original protection design was completed.

Power Monitoring

Power monitoring is only useful if the data collected is reliable and the monitoring points are correctly selected for the objective. Power quality measurements should be taken using instrumentation compliant with AS/NZS 61000.4.30, which sets the measurement methods required to produce repeatable and comparable results.

ARA structures monitoring programmes around what the data needs to answer — whether that is quantifying harmonic distortion, assessing voltage regulation across production periods, establishing a load demand profile ahead of an infrastructure upgrade, or providing baseline data for protection study inputs. The monitoring programme is set up to produce results that are usable for engineering decisions, not just data for its own sake.

Power Quality Reporting

ARA translates monitored site data into clear engineering findings. Power quality reports identify where the system is performing within acceptable limits, where it is not, and what the practical implications are for equipment, protection, and operational reliability. Depending on the scope, reporting may cover:

  • Voltage regulation and supply variation under varying load conditions
  • Harmonic distortion assessment against AS/NZS 61000.3 limits
  • Demand profile analysis and peak load identification
  • Power factor assessment and correction opportunities
  • Load balance across phases and distribution circuits
  • Waveform disturbance identification and probable source analysis
  • Remediation recommendations and indicative scope for corrective works
