Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiter (REFCL)

Following the 2009 Victorian Bush Fires Royal Commission, recommendations were made to reduce the risks of powerline faults starting fires in bush fire prone areas.

The REFCL system is designed to rapidly reduce the risk of a spark occurring when there is inclement weather which can cause power poles to fall over, meeting the ground and causing a spark.

The technology has consequential impacts on privately owned High Voltage customers. The potential rise in voltage can mean that some customers assets are not equipped to handle the increased voltage present as a result of the REFCL operating.
