HV Earthing Installation and Design in Melbourne
ARA Electrical Services designs, installs, and verifies earthing and bonding systems for high voltage installations across Melbourne and Victoria. Work spans substations, switching stations, transformer installations, and industrial facilities connected to the high voltage network — environments where fault current management and safe touch and step voltage control are engineering priorities, not afterthoughts.
Earthing system design and installation are developed in accordance with Australian Standards and applicable network provider requirements, including:
- AS/NZS 3000 — general earthing and bonding requirements
- AS 2067 — substation construction and earthing for high voltage installations
- Relevant distribution network service provider (DNSP) technical requirements
HV Earthing System Design
HV earthing systems are engineered to manage fault current dissipation and maintain safe touch and step voltages across substation and switching station environments where fault levels, soil conditions, or installation geometry create elevated risk during fault events.
AS 2067 and applicable network provider requirements specify that all conductive structures and HV plant be effectively bonded and connected to the earthing system to limit dangerous voltages during fault conditions. Design is developed to:
- Maintain continuous bonding between structures, plant, and the earthing grid
- Provide a low-resistance fault current dissipation path to earth
- Limit touch and step voltages to within safe levels during maximum fault conditions
Depending on site conditions and fault levels, this may involve earthing grids, driven rod arrays, buried conductor networks, or mesh arrangements. All metallic structures and equipment within the installation are bonded to the earthing system as part of the coordinated design.
Earth Resistance Testing and Verification
Following installation, earth resistance and bonding integrity are confirmed through structured testing. This includes fall-of-potential testing to verify that the earthing system resistance meets design criteria, and continuity testing across connections, joints, and cable terminations to confirm bonding integrity throughout the installation.
Where measured performance does not meet acceptance criteria, electrode configuration or grid layout is reviewed and adjusted before the system is returned to service. Test results are documented and form part of the as-built verification records for the installation.
Earthing System Assessment and Modelling
Where required, existing earthing systems can be assessed or modelled to confirm performance under fault and operational conditions. This is particularly relevant for installations where:
- Modifications have been made over time without corresponding earthing system review
- Original documentation is incomplete or does not reflect the current installation
- Fault levels have changed since the original system was designed
- Earthing performance has not been independently verified
Assessment includes review against AS/NZS 3000 and AS 2067, identification of high-resistance connections or bonding discontinuities, and verification of earthing integrity across switchyard structures and associated HV plant.
HV Earthing and Bonding Installation
ARA Electrical Services delivers HV earthing and bonding installations across Melbourne for high voltage and industrial environments. Work is carried out by experienced industrial electricians and engineers with a background in both electrical fault performance and high voltage installation requirements, ensuring earthing systems are suitable for real site conditions, applicable fault levels, and long-term operational reliability.
